Whew!
Take a deep breath. Let it out. Run a grounding cord from the base of your spine to the core of Earth. Relax and let go. This too shall pass.
That’s the sort of thing I’ve been telling myself this week as we gear up for my son’s wedding on Saturday and prepare for an onslaught of visiting relatives, all while getting my son-in-law settled into my house after three weeks in the hospital and three surgeries to repair his shattered wrist and broken knee.
You are probably wondering what the heck could have happened to him to shatter his wrist and break his knee. I would certainly be wondering too.
Imagine falling 150 feet from a cliff edge on the Northern California coast in the middle of the night – a pitch black moonless night — and living to tell the tale. Only the tale will probably never be told due to his head trauma and a complete loss of memory of that eventful night.
We will probably never know how or why he got so close to the cliff edge. He is not a risk taker, so it is all rather mysterious. Fortunately, his brain is almost back to normal aside from that one gap in his memory (probably nature’s way of keeping him from reliving the trauma).
Interesting to contemplate the connection with “The Fool” in the tarot deck. I think I’ll share the card with him and see what it brings up.
Apparently, he went out to walk the dog before bed. When he didn’t come back, my daughter called the police. An hour later the rescue party showed up and found him at the bottom of the cliff, groggy and pretty battered, but alive. (The dog found her way back to the hotel, dragging her leash behind her.)
It took another four hours to hoist him up and send him off to the nearest hospital by helicopter. The rescue was even posted on Instagram — like something you’d see on TV!
So that’s what’s going on in my world. Crazy! And we are all so grateful that things turned out as well as they did, considering how they could have gone. It will take a few months for him to heal, but eventually he should be pretty near back to normal. Whew!
Heart of Liberty!
And then there was the 4th of July – a big holiday here in the USA, but we didn’t pay it much attention this year. I did post one of my paintings on facebook to commemorate the day. It’s called Heart of Liberty and it’s one of my favorites. You can see a bigger version and order prints here.
I’m not a particularly patriotic person. Don’t get me wrong. I love the land I live in and the American dream, but I also see the glaring flaws and the destructive imperialistic, materialistic influence we have had on the world, much of which has led to our present-day climate crisis.
After all, the rampant growth of the fossil fuel industry and the extravagant consumption of meat and dairy products have largely been fed by American demand and example.
A Little Reminder
So, my painting is a little reminder to remember the heart, the caring and the compassion of the American people and to call that forward as we move into the future.
The time for war is over. We are creating a New Earth — with a new concept of liberty that is truly based on equality and justice for all. Not just lip service, but something we all live day by day.
It is a challenge for everyone in the world, but especially for Americans, who call our country the “land of the free.”
We will never be truly free until we allow everyone the freedom that we desire.
Bring it on!
